When the infant is full-term at the gestational age of 37 to 42 weeks, vaginal birth is the most safe for the fetus and the mother. Given the increased morbidity and mortality linked to operational cesarean deliveries over time, vaginal birth is recommended. In addition to reviewing the interprofessional team's role in managing labor and providing care for patients who choose to give birth vaginally, this exercise describes the process of vaginal delivery, the technique, and preparation needed to successfully complete a vaginal delivery. There are three phases to labor and delivery in a full-term pregnancy. Exam results throughout each stage can help identify short- and long-term complications for the anticipated vaginal delivery, such as fetal distress and hypoxemia, cord prolapse, placental abruption, uterine rupture, permanent disability, and maternal and/or fetal death. Each stage is managed differently.
