Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS/PCOD) is a hormonal disorder that primarily affects women of reproductive age. PCOS is a common health condition that affects teens and young women; it affects one out of every ten women of childbearing age. The complex interplay of five reproductive hormones, namely estrogen, gonadotropin-releasing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, progesterone, and luteinizing hormone, controls the reproductive system of women. A hormonal imbalance in these hormones causes polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) in women of reproductive age. The breakdown of reproductive hormones in women of childbearing age characterizes polycystic ovarian syndrome. Ovaries release abnormal amounts of androgen, causing havoc in female hormonal control (male hormones). This hormonal imbalance causes irregular or prolonged menstrual cycles, excess body hair, acne, and hair loss. Polycystic ovaries may fail to develop follicles and regularly release eggs, making pregnancy difficult.
